Famous Artists: Jackson Pollock – Abstract Expressionist

Paul Jackson Pollock was born as the youngest child of LeRoy McCoy Pollock and Stella McClure Pollock, in 1912. Four elder brothers made up the rest of his family. Though born in Cody, Wyoming; Pollock was brought up in California and Arizona. After a period of study at the Manual Arts High School located in Los Angeles, Pollock joined his brother Charles to study at the Art Students League with him under American muralist and painter – Thomas Hart Benton. Benton had a lasting influence on the abstract art output of Pollock. The art techniques of David Alfaro Siquieros, José Clemente Orozco – a Mexican muralist and El Greco – a Spanish painter, also greatly influenced Pollock.

Because the reclusive artist was a pioneer in , and notorious for his drip and splash style, it was a great loss to the art world when he died in a car accident at the young age of 44 resulting from his addiction to alcohol.

Cubism: Understanding Modern Art – Pablo Picasso and Cubism

Cubism – A Working Definition

Cubism originated in the first decade of the twentieth century. It is an abstract art form where the normally observed view is dissected by the artist and then put back together again, but with the conventions of representational art removed. Complex shapes are reduced to basic geometries, depth cues are removed, and faces which would not be visible to the observer from one position are nonetheless represented on the canvas. It is definitely one of the more academic art forms and the first branch of Cubism, Analytic Cubism, was well named.

To understand Picasso and Cubism it is important to know something about both the artist’s development and the state of art at the time.

The Evolution of Cubism

Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque are credited with the invention of Cubism. Accounts differ as to whether it originally Braque’s or Picasso’s idea or whether it was a genuinely equal discovery. The most widely accepted version is that Picasso persuaded Braque to make the move from Fauvism to the new form.

Surrealism: A Description of the Surrealism Art Movement

Most people have heard of the Surrealism movement. Surrealism began in France, but soon spread throughout the world. It has influenced art, literature, culture, politics, music and films. Yet not everybody has much of an idea about what the Surrealism movement was and where it came from.

The Surrealism movement began in 1924 with the publication of a book written by a French poet named Andre Brenton. The book he published was called ‘Manifeste du Surrealisme.’ This book described how Surrealism can be applied to art, poetry and literature as well as any other aspect of life. Brenton believed that by contacting the subconscious part of the mind a person could access poetic and artistic truths.

Surrealism was influenced by the work of Sigmund Freud in that it attempted to express the subconscious mind. It was based on the belief that the imagination is expressed in dreams. Surrealism has nothing to do with conscious thoughts, conventional ideas, rationale or logic. Surrealism, then, can be described as an expression of the subconscious mind.
