Best answer: Answer by Fuller BrushMy guess would be that he meant modern art is purposefully different than the realism and representation that precedes it. By going to an abstract level and embracing materials and formal aspects in a dance of process, the abstract expressionists and following artists present their interpretations for others to ponder. Often times these works visually “jump” off of the wall they are hung on, perhaps in an attempt to grab the viewer and entice them to spend time with the piece, which ultimately means time spent with the artist.
